Godrej & Boyce Supports Tondal Fishing Community in Khandala

~Contributed fishing boats, fishing nets, and safety jackets to fishing communities in Shirwal, Maharashtra

30th August, 2021: Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, announced today that it has been working to improve the lives of the fishing community of Tondal Village in Khandala Taluka in Shirwal, Maharashtra. Under the Godrej CSR programme, they have supported 6 fishing boats, fishing nets, and safety jackets to 12-15 families in the village whose livelihood is entirely dependent on fishing. Through an NGO partner, Godrej has built capacities of fishermen by imparting training, undertaking market linkages and forming a self-help group for fishermen. Through this self-help group the beneficiaries were able to contribute 50% amount of total project cost.

Prior to Godrej & Boyce's contribution, the fishermen fished with tubes and could only capture 3-5 kg of fish per day, earning approximately Rs 300-400 per day. Whereas, now they can catch 10-15 kg of fish per day, earning around Rs 800-1000 per day. Godrej & Boyce’s support has made a significant difference in their everyday lives, and the dangers involved in catching fish has been lowered using additional fishing nets, boats and safety jackets Godrej & Boyce is working towards the inclusive development of the different communities around its facilities. This project for the fisherfolk community around its Shirwal facility in Maharashtra is one of the unique initiatives it is undertaking in the Godrej CSR programme.
