Godrej & Boyce, Through Design Led Thinking Has Transformed Material Usage Over The Years

Conscious product life cycle planning has led to a reduction of hazardous waste generation by 52%

New Delhi, October 27, 2023: Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, has always been a trailblazing leader in the industry, that has consistently embraced a philosophy of sustainable practices. Being at the forefront of pioneering sustainability milestones and impactful social transformation, the company has been credited with India's first CII-IGBC Net Zero building to the first Zero Ozone Depletion Potential refrigerators to doubling its energy productivity, diverting 99.6% waste from landfills, and reducing its emissions by 60%.

The company’s ethos of environmental responsibility is deeply rooted in its Good & Green vision which rests on four strategic pillars: employability, innovating for Good & Green products, championing a greener India, and fostering community development. This also includes a commitment to material consciousness that the organisation has developed over the years. A design-led approach to innovation and strategy has led to the creation of not only Good & Green products but also processes that transcend mere functionality.

In an era defined by rapid consumption, the organisation has always kept ecological repercussions in mind and hence, materiality. The company’s recycled concrete materials, for instance, are made entirely from C&D (construction & demolition waste) and match the quality of those made from virgin materials. By repurposing waste, they have minimised the need for mining new aggregates and processed over 25000 metric tonnes of concrete debris waste.

From choices with regard to production material to implementation of recyclable packaging, to ensuring there is elimination of toxic substances – till the end of a product life cycle. This also approach includes the elimination of toxic substances – reducing hazardous waste generation by 52%.

Godrej & Boyce’s remarkable achievements across various parameters stand as a firm testament to its commitment towards enabling its consumers and the larger community to make responsible choices – ultimately driving a better, more sustainable lifestyle. With this in mind, the 126-year-old organisation, which has stayed relevant with constant innovation and design-led strategy has recently introduced ‘Conscious Collective’.

'Conscious Collective', a platform meant to foster provoking thoughts about conscious design, sustainable living and more will host its first edition this December. Scheduled over the 8th – 10th December, the three-day event, the platform has cemented collaborators for the same, with experts across architecture, interior design, research, and art. Notable collaborators include Rahul Mehrotra, Anupama Kundoo, Brinda Somaya, Krittika Aggarwal, and Sajid Wajid Shaikh.
