Drive Mechanisms move control rods up and down in reactor core to control nuclear reaction and also act as safety mechanism to shut down the reaction.

    Critical requirements:

    • Rod drop by 6.6 meter using gravity within 2 seconds
    •  Dampening mechanism to stop rod which can attain terminal velocity of 25 cm / sec
    • Service life of 30 years

     

    Challenges:

    • Manufacturing of 130 nos. precision machined components
    • Smooth functioning assembly for gravity drop and dampening
    • Assembly performance under simulated operating conditions using SCADA
