Applying manufacturing concepts for community development

Manufacturing concepts such as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Flow Manufacturing, Integrated Quality Management based on 5S and Total Employee Involvement are a core part of the business at Godrej Appliances. These practices have made our organisation more disciplined, helped transform the culture and ensured ownership from people at all levels.

The Godrej Appliances team is working closely with the community around their factory in Shirwal, Maharashtra to help improve the living conditions and overall social and economic status. The team carried out a needs assessment survey and identified four focus areas, namely, health and safety, education, employability and environment.

While manufacturing techniques helped transform our organisation, the very same concepts would help bring sustainable change in the community. With this idea, the team started involving the people in the community development process. We trained the villagers on these concepts through case studies and villagers listed development initiatives that they can take up. Projects such as a safety wall for the village well, road safety signboards, reducing water wastage, cleanliness and provision of toilets, water tank for supplying drinking water and solar street lamps were undertaken by the villagers.

The community came forward and took ownership to implement these projects. Today, villagers play an active role in improving their community and the Godrej Appliance team takes a back seat and helps overview the initiatives.
