This is the story of an industrialist who achieved what few industrialists are able to do to the same degree - win the esteem and regard of his workers so that they came to believe that he could do no wrong. A bond was established between them and him that was almost legendary. A rival trade union, anxious to enrol these workers to swell its own ranks, did everything in its power, by means more foul than fair, to incite these workers against the industrialists. It failed because it was unable to comprehend the nature  of the bond that held them together. Finally, in blind rage of frustration, a dasdtardly attack was incited on the industrialist, almost killing him. He carried on, for twelve years, racked by pain that was somewhat assuaged by the love that now came to him in redoubled measures from his workers ...

In 1993, at the ripe old age of eighty-one, Sohrab Pirojsha Godrej, Chairman of the Godrej group of companies, confessed in an intimate interview: 'No, I wouldn't like to live my life again. Not if it meant the whole of it.' In this memoir, recounted to B. K. Karanjia, his friend of over fifty years, Sohrab talks for the first time in detail about his life, including his troubled childhood and early years. Throughout his life Sohrab felt ignored and isolated. Nevertheless, he succeeded in carving a niche for himself in the company: he promoted advertising and marketing activities, public relations and customer services, and, in keeping with Godrej's commitment to social betterment, worker's welfare.
The book dwells on Sohrab's passionate commitment to the causes of environment and wildlife conservation - he was founder-trustee of WWF - lndia - and population control, and his love of travel and adventure which took him to over 160 countries, including Antarctica. The book is also a collector's treat, which is rich in anecdotes and rare photographs. Abundant Living, Restless Striving presents an exceptional portrait of a humble and concerned human being, always unafraid to speak his mind.
Abundant Living, Restless Striving, a memoir by Sohrab P Godrej, as recounted to B. K. Karanjia, published in Viking by Penguin Books India, Rs. 495

The story of Ardeshir Burjorji Godrej, founder-pioneer of the Godrej enterprise, is rich and varied. Deeply influenced by the nationalist Dadabhai Naoroji, he believed – like Gandhi later – that the struggle for freedom was both political and economic. Swadeshi became the breath of Swaraj or self-rule for Ardeshir. But he realized that mere boycott of British goods wasn’t good enough: they had to be substituted by Indian goods of equal, if not superior quality. Self-respect through self-reliance became his motto. The successful patenting of locks and safes, surpassing in quality even imported goods, followed by soap manufacture were steps in fulfilling this mission. All of these would make Godrej a household name for nearly seven decades thereafter.
